Douglas Yoshida – PBSC PartnerPrint
When some of the top oil and gas companies in Calgary need legal help, they call Douglas Yoshida, a partner in the Litigation Group at McCarthy Tétrault. And when PBSC program coordinators in Calgary need advice, Doug is also their top choice. Since 2004, he’s worked closely with student volunteers at the University of Calgary to provide guidance, support and insight on everything from ideas for new projects to event proposals.
“Lawyers working with PBSC receive a great deal of personal satisfaction from helping a community organization while also helping the development of students’ careers.”
Doug is one of two lawyers at McCarthy Tétrault’s Calgary office to sit on the firm’s National Pro Bono Committee, and says his relationship with PBSC began as a natural extension of that role. He’s since joined PBSC Calgary’s Advisory Board, but much of his work is less formal—simply providing feedback on ideas and suggestions, based on many years of experience with the chapter. “Mr. Yoshida has been a great source of PBSC Calgary history for me, having worked with past program coordinators and attended past events,” says program coordinator Tiffany Butler. “He is able to provide great insight into what works and doesn’t work. Mr. Yoshida has listened to my ideas for big events and projects, and helped me fine-tune projects and address any potential problems before they arise.”
For Doug, this is the best way to lend his expertise and knowledge to PBSC Calgary. “My biggest role has been acting as a resource for the program coordinators,” he says. “My efforts have mostly focused on helping pair up students with projects and then helping oversee all of these projects over the course of the school year.” But he also supports the PBSC program and its students in other ways, such as regularly speaking about his pro bono human rights work at PBSC Calgary’s events. Doug also serves as a liaison between PBSC Calgary and McCarthy Tétrault, PBSC’s National Law Firm partner.
As with any great partnership, the benefits flow both ways between PBSC Calgary and McCarthy Tétrault. “Lawyers working with PBSC receive a lot of positive energy from the students’ enthusiasm,” Doug says, “and a great deal of personal satisfaction from helping a community organization while also helping the development of students’ careers.”
